Hello parents!

This is the first newsletter in the 2016-17 year! I'm Meredith Bayus and I'll be doing the class newsletters this year. We kicked off our year with a bunch of Government studies. We voted on a government type (Federal Republic), name (Argentuna), flag (Maddie P's won), currency (Fins by Ben G.), and the people who are in the government. Drew B. and Marisa L.won the election and they are our President and Vice-President. We've also been doing Holt Math, and the 4th and 5th graders had their tests. We started our geology unit in Science and we've been studying Mock Rocks. For book clubs, we're reading The City Of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. We've been working on our Meyers-Briggs test posters for the characters during book club, too. Writer's Workshop is going strong, we've already written a story, either a Superhero story or a guidebook to Argentuna, and we're working on another, a newspaper. Specials are rolling along nicely, Gym, Art, Music, and Library. Library switches to Spanish in November.
Please remember to check classbuilder for your child's progress and remember that Halloween is a 1/2 day. Everyday we enjoy learning and living in Argentuna!!

October News Blowing In From Sun Fish City      posted 10-09-2015

Greetings Families of the 4/5 Magnet!
I'm Lily reporting on behalf of Mr. Fisher.

Already it's been a whole month of school! We've been working hard in Sun Fish City, starting our class government and finishing up our second stories! Your child is hard at work in this class, and we've enjoyed a few games of class kickball. Hope everyone who came had fun at the Fisher Kickball Game on the 4th of October.

Math:
Next week 5th grade math will be the unit 2 test on addition, subtraction and multiplication. Make sure your child studies hard so they can get an A!
7th grade math: There will be a quiz on 2-1 through 2-5 next Tuesday. It would help your child to quiz them on those lessons over the weekend so they are prepared for the test! It is mostly on integers, and we are now working on prime and composite numbers.

Writing:
We are now on our second story of the year! This story is a tragic story, so when you are helping them on it don't question yourself when you are in tears!

Social Studies:
This week we are doing a lot with our currency, and our first Market Day is next Friday! In case you are a parent who is new to this class, Market day is when we make mini businesses where we sell things to make more money. Make sure to give consent to your child if they are planning on making a mini business. Also, there will be a government test next Thursday. Please assure that your child is studying hard!

Reading:
In book clubs, we are reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. We have response questions after every book club period. In IDR your child is reading hard and logging what they read every day. Book reports are due Friday, October 23. Your child has a list of their options at home. Your child should be close to the end of their book, and they should have started their project by now. They only have one more weekend to work on it.

Science:
In science, we are making our own swingers, (pendulums), and learning about only changing one variable at a time.

Your child is in a safe place here in Sun Fish City. Your child is doing their work and are getting better and better at everything as the year goes on. I am hoping for yet another wonderful year!

Thanks,
Lily! (Sun Fish City Reporter)
