AR Reading Guidelines      posted 07-28-2007
MMS Library Link

Marana Middle School and the Wildfire Team will be using the Accelerated Reader Program this year.

Students should be reading an Accelerated Reader (AR) book for 60 minutes a day. They read for 20-30 minutes each day in home base and the remainder must be made up at home or during other free time. The student is tracked weekly by the home base teacher and told how many pages per day he/she needs to read. Incentives are provided both school wide and class wide.

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Guidelines

1. Have a book with you everyday, all day long
2. The book must be at your tested reading level
3. The subject must be something you are interested in
4. Your parents should be aware of what you are reading
5. Silently read IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT the entire reading session
6. Fill out your reading log every day
7. Request computer quiz time at the beginning of Home Base

RFU: Introduction Notes*

*These should be written or placed in Appendix A of your Science Journal

Reading for understanding is a method used to increase reading comprehension in academic subjects. Itis particularly useful for math, science and social science readings.

RFU strategies will be used in ALL your classes.

WHAT TO DO:
* PREVIEW all reading - this means that you will look for VISUAL CUES such as photos, graphs, cartoons, color, and different font sizes, types and colors.

* PREDICT at least three things that will be covered in the reading.

* Use TOOLS while you read. Active reading requires you to interact with the text using a highlighter and a pencil.

* For SCHOOL OWNED BOOKS you will use sticky notes to mark passages in the reading.

* When you START READING:

* HIGHLIGHT KEY WORDS AND NEW VOCABULARY.

* TALK TO THE TEXT by writing SCHEMA, questions, and clarifications in the margins.

* Complete GUIDED READING questions and problems as you read --this will help focus your reading.
