Poetry Project Rubric (Grading Requirements)      posted 02-26-2010

Poetry Book Rubric Date: March 5th, 2010
Goal: Create a book of your poetry and poetry written by other poets.
What must be included (70 points) :
1. A cover for the book including: a title, your name and date.
2. A table of contents listing the pages of the poems
3. 5 poems from famous authors
4. 5 of your poems:
1 Haiku or 1 Limerick
1 Concrete or Humorous
1 Free Verse
1 Rhyming Poem
1 poem of your choice (any style)

Use of Poetry Devices(20 points) :
You must also use at least one simile, one metaphor, one alliteration and one onomatopoeia in your poetry book in any of your poems.


Organization (30 points):
1. Table of contents at the front of the book listing the pages and the types of poems.
2. Page title should list the type of poem at the top.
3. Poems by famous poets should be on the page next to your poem.
4. Poets’ full names should be written underneath each poem.
5. Error-free spelling and punctuation.
6. Design and print is neat and easy to read.
7. Illustrations of your poem on the inside and outside of the book
8. For poems in your language, please include a translation of the poem in English.

Final Grade: Total points you earned ________/ 120 points = _________ x 100= _________.

2.Prose _Everyday language found in text books and fiction books.

3.Couplets_Two lines whose last words rhyme. It comes from the word two.

4.Iambic Pentameter _A type of poem that uses stressed and unstressed syllables and rhyming couplets

5.Syllable _One unit of sound like ba or ka. Word sounds can be broken into these small units

6.Stanza _Poems are divided by a group of lines. Sometimes the lines have the same rhyme or meter.

Poetry Devices
Visualization - create pictures in your head and use descriptive words to bring your poem alive

Descriptive Words - adjectives and adverbs that express emotion and bring your writing to life

Metaphor- a comparison of two unlikely things

Simile - a comparison of two unlikely things using the words like or as

Alliteration- Words in line that start with the same letter or sound at the front of the word

Onomatopoeia- words (sometime nonsensical) that express a sound

Rhyme- words that have the same sounds at the end of the words

Rhythm - the beat or measurement of the way a poem is read (also found in songs)

1) The Definition of POETRY:
A poem is story that has feeling. It can be short or long. It’s musical, creative and rhythmical. It can be funny or sad…

2) TYPES OF POEMS:
a. Rhyming poems-a technique that creates rhythm using words that sound alike. Ex: sleep deep

b. Free Verse- don’t have to rhyme but free verse has their own pattern. Poet expresses feelings (sad, happy)

c. Limericks- usually funny or silly, with five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 have 7-10 syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 have 5-7 syllables and also rhyme with each other.

d. Narrative poems- A long poem that tells a story. May have rhyme. Lines may have the same number syllables or stanzas have the same number of lines.

e. Concrete poems- A fun poem have different kinds of shapes.

f. Humorous poems- Poem that are fun and funny, often use silly or goofy words that can make you laugh.

g. Haiku poems- Short 3 line poems often about nature. 1st line has 5 syllables, 2nd has 7 syllables, and 3rd has 5 syllables (unrhymed)-
