English Language Summer Institute for Entering Ninth Grade ELLs

Middle and high schools / Event: July 6-August 13

CUNY's Summer Intensive English Language Institute provides an intensive English language program for entering ninth-grade ELLs at the intermediate or advanced level who are seeking to improve their English language skills in preparation for success in high school. The six-week summer program will be held July 6-August 13 on four CUNY campuses. Participants receive 30 hours a week of instruction, including four hours of reading, writing, listening comprehension, oral communication, and Internet research; one hour of ESL-focused physical activity; and, one hour of guided conversation practice at lunch. Applications are due by May 28, 2010 and are available online. For further information, please call Vicki Herschman at (212) 652-2057.

Curriculum


Goals
→ Improve students’ reading and writing skills
→ Prepare for ELA Exam & NYSESLAT State Exam
• Thematic units – study of culture and history
• Practice of reading, writing, listening and speaking
• Reading various fiction & non-fiction genres
• Writing – fiction (memoir & creative)
- non-fiction (variety of print & essays)




Materials Needed for Class
1) Pens, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpener!
2) 2 notebooks or 1 notebook divided into 2 sections
3) Folder or Binder for homework
3) DICTIONARY (bi-lingual, English or electronic)



Reading & Writing
• Independent Reading - 30 minutes at home & school every day
• Independent Writing – Daily
• 25 books by the end of the school year
• Monthly Book Talks
