COURSE CONTENT, Goals AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of Elementary Algebra is to help students achieve a level of academic competence in elementary algebra skills that will enable them to work successfully in the Intermediate Algebra Course and other college level classes.

Objectives:
SWBAT: Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable.
SWBAT: Demonstrate understanding of linear equations in two variables and their graphs including slopes and intercepts.
SWBAT: Demonstrate understanding of arithmetic of polynomials, including factoring and solving equations by factoring
SWBAT: Demonstrate understanding of arithmetic of rational expressions,including Solving rational equations.
SWBAT: Solve systems linear equations in two or more variables

Class participation is highly encouraged. Participation means arriving to class on time and leaving after class is over, attending class lectures consistently, and being respectful of the classroom and your fellow students. If I observe you struggling with your participation, I will ask to meet with you to discuss ways to improve it.
Homework
Homework will be assigned each week. Unless stated otherwise, I will randomly select a homework section to collect. Please make sure to bring all of your homework to class so that you will be prepared to turn in any section I ask for. I do not accept late homework; however, I will drop one assignment. If you have questions on the homework, please utilize the resources available to you (i.e. skills center, office hours).
Quizzes
There will be quizzes throughout the semester. The quiz will not be like a typical quiz. The quizzes are opportunities to see where you are in the class and to determine strategies to help you to do better in the class. The quizzes will not be graded, instead you will receive a check plus for completing the quiz. The only way for you not to receive a check plus is if you miss the quiz, or you put no effort into answering the question. I do not allow makeup quizzes, but I will drop one quiz. If you usually take tests/quizzes at DSPS office, let me know so that I can send the quiz over to the office.

Exams
There will be an exam at the end of every two chapters given on Thursday unless I specify otherwise. The exams are comprehensive, so please let me know if you don’t understand something before the test, as I want you to do well. There are no makeup exams. I will replace the lowest exam score with the second to lowest exam score at the end of the semester.
Final Exam (Tuesday: Dec 17th 7:10-9.30 pm) There is one final exam. You must take this exam. No final exam = no passing grade. The final exam is also comprehensive.
