TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS
Tom Carson (2009). PreAlgebra. Addison Wesley. (Third Edition)

Please bring something to write with (preferably a pencil) to every class session. Please bring a binder that has paper and pockets so that you can take notes and keep work that I return to you.

COURSE CONTENT
We will perform operations with integers (negative and positive numbers). We will solve linear equations, and we will work with rates, ratios, proportions and percentages. We will also do a review of fractions and decimals and look at unit conversions. Success in this class will provide you with the foundation necessary to succeed in Math 118. By the end of this class, you should be proficient with the following student learning outcomes.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will be able to perform integer subtraction.
Students will be able to solve multistep equations.
Students will be able to graph linear equations of the form y=mx+b using a t-table.

GRADING
Homework 15%

Exams 40%
Final Exam 30%
100%

Class participation is highly encouraged. Participation means arriving to class on time and leaving after class is over, attending class lectures consistently, and being respectful of the classroom and your fellow students. If I observe you struggling with your participation, I will ask to meet with you to discuss ways to improve it.

Homework
Homework will be assigned ones a week. Each week unless stated otherwise, I will randomly select a homework section to collect. Please make sure to bring all of your homework to class so that you will be prepared to turn in any section I ask for. I do not accept late homework; however, I will drop one assignment. If you have questions on the homework, please utilize the resources available to you (i.e. skills center, office hours, Mathxl, Mathlab e.t.c).

Quizzes
There will be quizzes throughout the semester. The quiz will not be like a typical quiz. The quizzes are opportunities to see where you are in the class and to determine strategies to help you to do better in the class. The quizzes will not be graded, instead you will receive a check plus for completing the quiz. The only way for you not to receive a check plus is if you miss the quiz, or you put no effort into answering the question. I do not allow makeup quizzes, but I will drop one quiz. If you usually take tests/quizzes in the DSPS office, please inform the class session before the quiz so that I can send the quiz over to the office.

Exams
There will be an exam at the end of every two chapters. The exams are comprehensive, so please let me know if you don’t understand something before the test, as I want you to do well. There are no makeup exams. I will replace the lowest exam score with the second to lowest exam score at the end of the semester.

Final Exam Dec 16th
There is one final exam. You must take this exam. No final exam = no passing grade. The final exam is also comprehensive.

MY EXPECTATIONS OF YOU*

1. COME PREPARED TO SUCCEED
• Bring your book, paper, binder and pencils to every class.
2. ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES TO REMAIN OFF AND IN YOUR BAGS
3. RESPECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS IN THE CLASS
• Side conversations allowed only when we are working on small group activities. One person speaks at a time.
4. ARRIVE ON TIME FOR CLASS

* Please make sure you are aware of the Student Code of Conduct located in the college catalog on page

not followed.

Motivational Quote:
Somewhere, someone is practicing. And when you meet him/her on the field, face to face, one on one, he’ll beat you unless that someone who’s practicing is you. So work the left, run the stairs, crank the corners. Give it everything you’ve got, everyday. And when you get tired and feel like quitting, ask yourself, is the other guy tired? Is he quitting?
