Classroom behaviour      posted 09-03-2011

Here's a reminder of the most important classroom rules, with further explanation about each. If you keep to these, it will help everyone.

1. Be in the classroom on time and ready to start the lesson on time.

Chatting, instead of getting your materials out and sitting down, doesn't really count as being ready on time, does it?

There is no break between lessons 1 & 2, lessons 2 & 3, lessons 4 & 5 and lessons 6 & 7. You will be late if you are not in the classroom.

2. Stay in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up.

Keep your rubbish to throw away at the end of the lesson. BTW
please don't scrunch up papers. It's noisy and untidy.
Get a drink or use the toilet during the breaks.

3. Eating, drinking and chewing are for breaks – not for class.

4. Bring the materials you need. Don't borrow.

5. Only the lesson materials should be out and they should be used sensibly. Don't throw things!

Things that shouldn't be out and things that are thrown or otherwise misused will probably be confiscated. By the way, there is a school policy about mobile phones, etc.

6. Talk only when permitted.

Don't interrupt the teacher or anyone else who is making a contribution to the class.

Please put your hand up and wait to be called on.

Having loud conversations or conversations with people in other parts of the room stops others from concentrating -- it is not allowed.
Quiet discussion of the work with someone next to you is fine. Chatting isn't.

7. Use polite speech and body language.

8. Do not cheat or help others to cheat.

Don't copy on tests, and keep your own work covered.
Do your own work and not to allow others to copy it.

9. Follow instructions without arguing. :-)

If there is a problem, please ask to speak to the teacher during a quiet time.

1o & 2o ESO: Preparing and presenting a work file      posted 09-01-2011

A. A work file is all of the work for ONE topic only. Don't include work from any other topic.

B. Put the work in this order. . .

1. Work from the textbook--in page order, starting with the earliest pages.

2. Corrected vocabulary tests--in date order.

3. Any other work I've asked you to include--in date order.

C. Put everything in a clear plastic pocket.

D. NOTES

1. Check the topic blogs on my webpage if you aren't sure whether you have all of the work.

2. You can improve your mark by making useful corrections on work I've handed back.

3. If I have not accepted a piece of work, then it must be done properly before it will count towards the mark.

4. If I ask you to re-do work, make sure to include both the original page and the new page. A clean page just looks like a piece of work you didn't hand in on time.

E. Assessment

1. Each topic file gets a mark out of 5.

2. Late work will lose 10% per school day, whether or not you have a lesson with me on that day. (Exceptions are made for illness.) If you know you will be absent on the day it's due, you need to discuss it with me in advance.

3. You can pass if your work is complete and adequate, and in the correct order.

4. For marks above a bare pass, it needs to be of a higher quality, especially on the more difficult questions.

5. In order to get the very highest marks, the answers to questions need to be thoughtful, showing good understanding and use of technical vocabulary. Optional questions need to be done to a good standard.

All students: How to present your work      posted 09-01-2011
Example of a good assignment

Do it right – or do it again! :-)

PAPER:
Size A4. Lined. It should not have ragged edges, be torn, damaged, dirty or have marks that aren't part of your work.

MARGINS & SPACING:
Leave a margin at the top, bottom and on both sides. Skip a line between questions.

WRITING:
Use ONLY black or dark blue ink. Write clearly. Do not use pencil or colours excepts in graphs and diagrams.

CONTENTS:
(1) Getting started
1. On the top line, write your name and the date. (Leave a margin above it.)
2. Skip a line.
3. If it is work from the textbook, write the page number and the work you're supposed to do.
4. Skip a line.
5. Write the title of the work.
6. Skip a line before starting the work.
7. (1) For question 1 or any question where you fill in the blanks, underline the filled-in words.
(2) You must include the questions. You may copy a question and give a short answer. OR you may include the question in a full sentence answer. Answers without questions will not be counted.
(3) Number the questions in the way they are in the book and on the board.

MORE THAN ONE PAGE?
(1) You may continue your work to the back of the page as long as that doesn't make it hard to read.
(2) If you do hand in work with more than one page, put it in a clear plastic A4 pocket.

MISTAKES: We all make them. If you have your own tippex, you may carefully tippex out the mistake. Otherwise, simply draw a NEAT line through the missteak mistake.

GET IT IN ON TIME
(1) The work is due on the date I've given you.
(2) Late work is penalised at the rate of 10% of the possible marks per day or a loss of marks on the final workfile.
(3) If you are absent when the work is assigned or collected, hand it in when you get back with a note on it giving the dates on which you were absent. Do NOT wait until the next class meeting.
(4) Do not expect work to be accepted after a final deadline.

Click on the above link to see what a good assignment would look like. It should be on lined paper, but I couldn't show that on the computer!

How will 1o ESO & 2o ESO be assessed?      posted 09-01-2011

How are the courses assessed?

1o and 2o ESO Ciencias Naturales

Topic exams: 35%
These test understanding of each topic.

Topic file: 35%
This is a collection of all of the work done on each topic. Pupils should submit work regularly for checking by the teacher. There is an opportunity to correct and improve it before it's given a grade.

Vocabulary tests: 5%
Regular tests on technical vocabulary for the topic or short tests on the current work.

Other assignments: 5%
These are homework or classwork assignments which are not based on the questions in the textbook. They get a number grade.

Projects: 10%
There is one large project each term that requires outside research and there may be some shorter assignments.

Behaviour & attitude: 10%
This includes class participation, punctuality, consideration for others, attitude towards work and contribution to the class.

PLEASE NOTE: These percentages may vary slightly from term to term as the balance of the type of work isn't always the same.
