Workfiles due

1oB: Revision      posted 06-25-2012

You have this lesson for revision and for making sure your workfile is complete and in order.

There will be a +10% bonus for workfiles that are handed in by the end of morning break on Tuesday.

Revision notes for Tuesday's exam      posted 06-24-2012

1. Study page 49 – all of the second section beginning “You will meet these key ideas …..”
2. Also p.63, part 2 (except for the last two statements).
3. Know the difference between an atom and a molecule.
4. Recognise the difference between an element and a compound if you know the formula for the substance.
5. Be able to recognise whether particles are those in an element, a compound or a mixture. In an element all the atoms are the same kind, even if they're molecules. A compound has at least two different kinds of atoms joined together. A mixture will have different kinds of particles not joined together.
6. Study the particle arrangements of the elements in the two tables on p.53.
7. Recognize where metals and non-metals are in the Periodic Table. The most reactive elements are on the far left and the least reactive ones are on the far right. Study p.54.
8. Understand what's happening in the reactions on p.60 and p.61, burning methane and splitting water.
9. Know the symbols for the following elements: aluminium, calcium, carbon, chlorine, copper, hydrogen, iron, nitrogen, oxygen, potassium, silicon, sulphur.
10. Comparing compounds and mixtures. “Mixtures” p. 70 + Q1 on p.71 and Q1 on p.74.

f. The rabbit's eyes are …...... so they have all-round vision. This means that ….....

Who eats what? (planned)      posted 11-21-2011

-A food chain shows what eats what in a habitat. For example, a squirrel eats acorns, but a fox eats the squirrel. The squirrel and the fox are consumers because they eat something else. The acorn comes from a tree which is a producer. It makes its own food using the energy of sunlight.
-A squirrel eats beech nuts as well as acorns, and a fox eats rabbits as well as squirrels. These different food chains combine in a food web, which shows all the feeding relationships in the habitat linked together.

Regular changes      posted 11-16-2011

-The surroundings (environment) can change regularly. For example, conditions in a habitat change from bright and warm during the day to dark and colder at night.
-Environmental conditions also change through the year. Some birds fly many miles (migrate) to another country to escape the winter cold.
Organisms living in the habitat are adapted in different ways to these regular changes.
-Climatic stress is extreme changes in weather.

Read pp.34-5

Q1, Q3-4

Q5 Here are some definitions of words in the reading. Write the correct words for each one. (a) brightness, (b) individual living thing, (c) active during the day, (d) laying eggs in sheltered places during the winter, (e) special features that help an organism survive in its habitat, (f) using sound to find food, (f) alive but not growing, (g) the amount of moisture in the air

Q6 Name two adaptations the owl that let it hunt at night.
Q7 Name three advantages nocturnal animals have over diurnal ones.

*Q8 Extra Credit http://www.rspb.org.uk/youth/learn/migration/whichbirds/index.aspx

(2) Name 3 species of bird that migrate to the UK from the north. When do these northern visitors come?*

1oA Making organisms      posted 09-22-2011

Read pp.10-11 Q1-3

The three main ideas are:

1.) Living things are made of CELLS - CELLS of the same kind form TISSUE - TISSUES make up ORGANS such as heart and lungs - groups of ORGAN working together to do a job form ORGAN SYSTEMS - all the ORGAN SYSTEMS together form an ORGANISM which is an individual living thing.

2.) Cells multiply by dividing. The cell copies the genetic information and then the cell splits into two identical ones.

3.) Cancer cells divide much more quickly than normal cells.

Homework:
You will need to understand the meaning of the language bank words on pages 9 & 11 for a test next Monday.

Q5. Draw a table (neatly, use a ruler) called CELL PARTS. It needs 4 columns: part / function / plant cell / animal cell.

Function (job it does) needs to be a wider column than the others.

Include the following cell parts: chloroplasts, cell wall, nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole.

In the third and fourth column, you need to write yes or no.

*Q6. What is a specialized cell?*
